For parents of a child with an egg allergy, they can also stir up a mix of anxiety, worry, and a million \u201cwhat ifs.\u201d You want your child to feel included and safe, without feeling like they\u2019re missing out on the celebration. I\u2019ve been there, and I promise: with a little planning, birthday parties can be both safe and magical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ll walk you through how to navigate birthday parties when your child has an egg allergy (or any allergy), so you can focus more on the memories and less on the stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>First\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Teach Your Child About their Allergy and Safety<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For school aged children, it\u2019s tempting to grab what everyone else is eating, especially at a birthday part. However, it\u2019s important to learn about health, safety and emergencies as early as possible. Before the party, remind your child of the safety expectations in a way that feels empowering rather than restrictive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, coach your child with consistency by saying things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t forget, if you\u2019re not sure if something is safe, ask me first.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I have your treat in the special container, and I\u2019ll give it to you when it\u2019s time for cake.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also role-play situations so our daughter feels confident saying nmo, thank you. We also try to empower her by explaining that she is responsible for her body and she can make decisions for her own health and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Next\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Communicate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We always prioritize talking with the host. A quick, friendly conversation can go a long way. We always ask what the menu will be so I know if I need to bring a full meal for my daughter. Depending on the location of the party and the menu, we will check ingredients ahead of time or just bring our own food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plan\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pack a Safe Treat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Birthday cake is the star of most parties, but it\u2019s also one of the most common foods containing eggs. Instead of hoping there will be a safe dessert, we <strong><em>always<\/em><\/strong> bring our own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the timing of the party, we may bring<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a cupcake from home (most typically) or our favorite allergy-friendly bakery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>special cookies and or a personal candy selection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scope Out the Food Table<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you arrive, do a quick scan of the food setup. Check if utensils are being shared between dishes (a sneaky cross-contact risk) and if egg-heavy foods are nearby. If the host is serving food buffet-style, keep your child\u2019s plate separate and prepare it yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Always\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Know your Allergy Action Plan &amp; How to Use your EpiPen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with the best precautions, accidents can still happen. <strong><em>Always<\/em><\/strong> carry your child\u2019s EpiPen or other prescribed medication and keep it within reach and not buried in a bag across the room. Personally, our med bag always follows our daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lastly\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Focus on the Fun<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind that the best memories have nothing to do with the food.
